"Harvest of Empire" screening in NYC & LA -- how wave of immigration was brought on by US

Harvest of Empire screening in your area on Sept. 28th for just one week!

Harvest of Empire, directed by Peter Getzels and Eduardo Lopez (also producer), is based on a book by award-winning journalist, author, and Democracy Now! co-host Juan Gonzalez.

The documentary reveals how United States foreign policy toward Latin America has had, and still does, a direct effect on the immense wave of Latin American migration to the U.S. In fact, the countries that the U.S. has had the most political and economic influence like Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, and Guatemala are the ones that have sent the most people to this country.

"From the wars for territorial expansion that gave the U.S. control of Puerto Rico, Cuba and more than half of Mexico, to the covert operations that imposed oppressive military regimes in the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador, Harvest of Empire unveils a moving human story that is largely unknown to the great majority of citizens in the U.S." reads the documentary's official Website.

SOA Watch’s founder Father Roy Bourgeois is featured on this documentary as he is interviewed about the School of the Americas. The film makes special mention to the School of the Americas and how most of the human rights abuses and the massacres in El Salvador in the 80s, including the killing of the nuns and the murder of Archbishop Romero, were done by people trained at the School of the Americas. The film also connects to the great number of people fleeing civil wars in their countries, like in Guatemala, Nicaragua, and El Salvador in which the United States government played a key role in backing one side or the other.

Democracy Now!, hosted by Amy Goodman, did a one-hour segment on the documentary on September 25th.

The film will premiere in Los Angeles and New York on September 28th for just one week.

September 26, 2012

Dear Common Dreamer,

Imagine if you got all your daily news from the corporate media... what would you know?

Would you know how the failure to confront the coming crisis of global warming has brought us to critical climate tipping points?

Would you know that the ‘debt crisis’ is manufactured by ‘disaster capitalists’ who want to destroy the social net and privatize our remaining commons?

Would you know how the flood of campaign cash resulting from Citizens United is not only poisoning our democracy -- but enriching the corporate media?

Would you know of the growing movement around the world to stand up against the banksters and their draconian ‘austerity’ measures?

Of course not.

If you got all your daily news from the corporate media you’d be a lousy, ill-informed citizen of this planet. But you would be one hell of a consumer.

Common Dreams turns 15 years old this fall. We began because we recognized the power of using the Internet to build a new media model. An independent, not-for-profit media bringing you the news that matters.

We are proud of what we've accomplished over the past 15 years on a shoestring budget, a small but dedicated staff -- and an amazing network of supporters.

You can count on us to be here for you.

But you are what makes this possible. You are what makes us strong.

We must raise $35,000 more in this fundraising campaign. If bringing you the news that matters is important to you, then we need you to help sustain our work.

Can we count on you to keep us moving forward?

We can’t do it without you!

In gratitude,

Craig Brown
for the whole Common Dreams team

To join Elizabeth Warren's voter protection team...

Elizabeth Warren for Massachusetts

All across the country, we've seen Republican dirty tricks try to keep people from voting -- or keep people's vote from counting.
We can't let that happen in Massachusetts this November.
We're looking for lawyers, law students and other legal professionals to join Elizabeth Warren's Voter Protection Team. Can you help us?
Our Voter Protection Team will play a critical roll in the Elizabeth's election. This volunteer legal support group will ensure that registered voters all across the Commonwealth are able to vote on Election Day without fear of voter suppression or intimidation.
Can you commit to work at the polls on Election Day in Massachusetts to make sure that no eligible voter is denied the right to vote? Or do you know someone who can?
Thank you,
Gerry McDonough
Election Protection Director
