In advance of the March 28, 2014 release of
the major motion picture Cesar Chavez, the Cesar Chavez Foundation,
Participant Media and Pantelion Films have just launched a petition drive
urging President Obama to proclaim Cesar Chavez' March 31 birthday an annual
National Day of Service. The UFW is proud to lend its support to the action and we want to ask for your help. Could you please click here to visit the petition page and sign the petition and tell friends and family to do the same? The goal is to garner 100,000 signatures on the petition that urges President Obama to proclaim an annual National Day of Service so all Americans in each of the 50 states can take part in local service activities. http://action.ufw.org/chavezpetition

Diego Luna’s powerful cinematic
portrait of the legendary activist stars Michael Pena (End of Watch),
America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), Rosario Dawson (Sin City) and
John Malkovich (In The Line of Fire). Chronicling the birth of a
mass grass roots American movement, Cesar Chavez tells the
story of the epic 1960s Delano grape strike and boycott as well as how Chavez
was torn between his duties as a husband and father, and his dedication to
leading farm workers out of poverty and discrimination. Passionate but
soft-spoken, Chavez embraced non-violence as he battled greed and prejudice
in his struggle to bring dignity to long-suffering people. Chavez also
inspired millions of Americans from all walks of life who never worked on a
farm to fight for social justice. His triumphant journey is a remarkable
testament to the power of one person’s ability to change the world.trailer of Cesar Chavez: An American Hero. Release date: March 28, 2014 http://action.ufw.org/chaveztrailer Cesar Chavez is produced by Canana Films’ Diego Luna, Pablo Cruz and Gael Garcia Bernal as well as John Malkovich, Lianne Halfon and Russell Smith of Mr. Mudd. Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King of Participant Media served as executive producers. Cesar Chavez petition background: Cesar Chavez rose from grinding poverty, prejudice and abuse as a migrant farm worker to begin the first successful farm workers’ union in American history. Senator Robert F. Kennedy even called Cesar Chavez “one of the heroic figures of our time.” He led farm workers in strikes, marches and protests. Millions rallied to La Causa, the cause, by boycotting grapes and other products. He fasted for nonviolence and against toxic pesticides. President Obama once stated, "Our world is a better place because Cesar Chavez decided to change it." Now it's time to honor Chavez's legacy. Sign the petition to urge President Obama to declare a Cesar Chavez National Day of Service so Americans can honor the legacy of this civil rights and farm labor icon by engaging in community service and working for nonviolent change. |
