Today is the day – it’s National Voter Registration Day, a nationwide, nonpartisan effort to register thousands of voters on one single day! Across the country, volunteers, celebrities, businesses, online activists, local officials, social service providers, and a whole host of others are joining hands in an unprecedented nationwide effort to help Americans get registered to vote. All in all, more than 1,000 partners are participating in what promises to be a day to remember. League volunteers across the country are a huge part of this effort – 249 Leagues from 44 states are hosting events today! League members and volunteers are busy running registration tables, talking to new voters, and organizing last minute details in order to carry out the most effective registration drives possible. Here’s just a sampling of what we’re hearing from the field: the League of Women Voters of Minnesota will be on-hand to help register an anticipated huge crowd of brand-new citizens at a naturalization ceremony; Leagues in Houston, TX and Miami, FL are partnering with Univision to staff phone banks and help answer voters’ questions; the League of Women Voters of Topeka, KS will be running all over town to carry out registration events at a whopping seven local high schools; the Lake Bluff, IL League will engage new voters at a busy printing shop; League volunteers will set up shop at a shopping mall in Tulare County, CA; and our incredible team in the Hamptons, NY will be spread out across fifteen locations along the South Fork of Long Island to reach new voters!  This incredible level of participation underscores just how committed League volunteers are to doing what our organization does best: engaging and empowering voters to make the most of our democracy! What can you do to be a part of today’s voter registration efforts? Help us get new voters registered and remember to remind them to head to the polls on November 6! Send our e-card to three people you think may not be registered – perhaps they weren’t 18 for the last election, perhaps they’ve moved, or perhaps they’ve never engaged in the political process before. And don’t underestimate the power of suggestion – it has been proven that social media can influence your friends to take action, so take a picture of yourself with your voter registration card or a voter registration application and post it on Facebook and Twitter and encourage those in your network to get registered today! Bloomberg’s Army Will Not Silence Us #occupy #ows

The first anniversary of Occupy Wall Street was a joyous affair for the 99%. Yet regrettably, it was also a day that illustrated how Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s ‘private army’ has been increasingly unleashed to beat, arrest, imprison, and broadly suppress OWS. Please post your videos, photos, and stories about how your rights were infringed on the Occupy Bloomberg’s Army Facebook page. Occupy is a nonviolent movement, but this has not prevented Bloomberg’s Army from engaging in targeted arrests of specific organizers as well as random street ‘snatch and release’ intimidation tactics. On September 17th not even the constant drone of helicopters overhead could drown out the screams of ‘I’m a journalist’ from the reporters who were arrested merely for practicing their and our right to freedom of the press. And not even a cry of ‘I’m a City Councilmember’ was enough to staunch the established policy of brutality within the Mayor of Wall Street’s Police Department. The message being sent by Bloomberg’s Army is being heard loud and clear. In Bloomberg’s New York: anyone who supports Occupy Wall Street in any fashion is being made an example of. Were you one of these people extra-legally arrested or assaulted, or have you witnessed someone who was? Post your videos, photos, and stories on the Occupy Bloomberg’s Army Facebook page. We will not be stymied by the over 180 arrests on our anniversary, nor intimidated by the unprovoked and random nature of so many of them.
