Want to help #OccupyTheKochs ? ~ @other98 #ows

We have an action lined up against the Koch Brothers and their far-right corporate money machine - and if it goes well, we'll be able to take it on the road to the Occupations that are happening all across the country, making banksters cry.
But we need your help to make it happen.
Help us make headlines against the Kochs and for the Occupy movement: please pitch in TODAY to make this high-profile action possible.
On Friday November 4th, while the Kochs host a fancy gala in DC with their front group Americans For Prosperity, we'll be bringing a thousand of our closest friends together for a Koch Brothers Guerrilla Drive-In, debuting a new set of viral videos that will expose the Kochs' attempts to buy our democracy.
The last time we did this, 1000 New Yorkers showed up at the David Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, making major news - and making the Kochs decidedly unhappy.
If this second Koch Drive-In goes well, we'll be taking the Drive-In actions around the country, holding Corporate America accountable in a very public way everywhere we go. But we can't do it without your help.
Support this effort to put the Kochs back in the spotlight - and the American Dream back in the hands of the other 98% -- nay, 99% -- of us.
Need extra motivation? You won't believe what the Kochs are calling their get-together: "Defending The American Dream."
The Kochs and the American Dream? We know that's more like an American Nightmare - and we're betting that you do too.
Help us fight back against the Kochs TODAY.
Thank you for all you do to make this movement real.
Sincerely,
John Sellers

The Other 98% is making democracy work for the rest of us. Like what we do? You can donate to support this movement right now.

Wall Street is using its money to try to defeat Elizabeth Warren (our @elizabethforma). I wonder why. #ows

Elizabeth Warren for Massachusetts

As soon as Elizabeth announced she was taking her fight for working families to the U.S. Senate, the big corporate lobbyists and Wall Street titans made abundantly clear what they were going to do to our campaign.
In fact, it's as clear as a recent headline in Politico: "Wall Street Readies Assault on Elizabeth Warren."
That assault is starting now. Today, Scott Brown will be the guest of honor at a fundraiser hosted by lobbyists from some of the biggest firms on Wall Street, expected to contribute $50,000 or more -- in one night -- to Brown's campaign.
It's up to people like you and me to help Elizabeth fight back. Let's match Wall Street's big bucks for Scott Brown by raising $50,000 from the grassroots to support Elizabeth Warren's campaign for middle-class families.
Last year, Forbes Magazine named Scott Brown one of Wall Street's favorite congressmen, and it's no surprise that Wall Street is coming after Elizabeth and all of us by raising big bucks for Scott Brown. We have to fight back.
We can stand up to the big banks and Wall Street lobbyists and stand up for middle class families -- by standing with Elizabeth Warren today.
Elizabeth has worked her whole life to make sure the hard-working families of Massachusetts and America get better opportunities and a chance to get ahead -- by standing up to Wall Street and the big banks.
With your help, that's what she'll do in the United States Senate.
Thank you for your support today,

To help stop genocide in Sudan ~ @endgenocide #humanrights

Add This
Dear Ray,

The situation in Sudan is dire and it's getting worse with every day that passes.

As you read this email, families in South Kordofan are seeking refuge in holes dug into the ground as makeshift bomb shelters, families are being torn apart, children are at risk of losing a limb, or worse, from an unexpected attack — these crimes are happening every day while men, women and children are left to suffer and die — all on the orders of one man.

Sudan's president, Omar al-Bashir, the same man responsible for the atrocities in Darfur is at it again — slaughtering men, women and children and displacing hundreds of thousands of people in South Kordofan and Blue Nile, Sudan. And Secretary of State Hillary Clinton — once a supporter of our efforts to end genocide in Darfur — is actually entertaining the idea of normalizing relations with this genocidal monster.

Sign the postcard to Secretary Clinton now — because with every new signature, our impact will be stronger and louder. We will hand-deliver your postcard, along with thousands of others, to Secretary Clinton and demand that she stand up for the people of Sudan and start applying strong sanctions against Bashir now.
Don't Let Him Get Away with Murder

Bashir is an international criminal wanted for crimes against humanity and genocide. And he must be stopped. Be a voice for the people of Sudan. Sign the postcard to demand justice TODAY.

I can't stress how important this is — Bashir's government is attacking civilians now and we must act to stop it.

After you sign your name, we will hand-deliver your postcard to Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. Please sign the postcard and join the thousands of others who are demanding justice now.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Tom Andrews,

What happened in Time Square on Oct 15 #ows #o15

I was there.

I didn't have any special vantage point.

Mostly I was in the "TKTS" triangle where people go to buy discount tickets for Broadway plays; it is in the shape of a wedge, and is located between 46th and 47th Streets, between 7th Avenue and Broadway.

Although there were probably 40,000 or 50,000 people in the area, media reports that the protest "took over Times Square" are not correct.  There were many tourists, theater-goers, and other regular Times Square-type visitors, and the main body of marchers never was allowed to even enter Times Square.

This is what I saw:

When I arrived, at around 5:00 p.m., there was an amiable crowd of people in the TKTS triangle park We were awaiting the marchers who were wending their way uptown on 6th Avenue.

A band, and numerous street performers, some on stilts, began entertaining, people were dancing, tapping their toes, etc.

When the marchers arrived, via 46th Street, at 7th Avenue, they were met by metal police barricades, and were unable to cross, and did not attempt to cross, 7th Avenue, even when the crossing light was green.

They were chanting, and shouting, but not using any force or resistance of any kind.

Some people in the triangle shouted "let them cross" or "let them across".

Although the marchers were exactly where the police had directed them to be -- behind the barricade on 46th Street -- suddenly a swarm of police appeared, seemingly from nowhere. White uniforms, blue uniforms, helmeted riot troops, numerous officers -- some in riot gear, some not -- carrying large sheathes of plastic handcuffs, some police officers wearing suits and ties, and a number of whiteshirted helmeted policemen on horseback.

For no reason, about a hundred cops swarmed past the barricade, and started arresting the marchers, some of them women, dragging them out on to Seventh Avenue, and dragging them to the ground to administer the plastic handcuffs, although none of the people were resisting, and none needed to be dragged to the ground for any reason other than purposeful humiliation.

Police paddy wagons, and large rolls of orange plastic kettling fences, were in evidence.

The police on horseback were somehow goading the horses to move about, in a tense manner, and some of  the mounted police charged the horses on to 46th Street, where the demonstrators were standing.

Medics appeared on the scene.

A column of police in riot gear marched north on 7th Avenue, where I was standing, and then stopped and faced ME, acting as though they were about to conduct a raid and arrest us when given the signal. They were all heavily armed, and had billy clubs and plastic handcuffs, and helmets with face guards.

All we had been doing was standing, and talking, and taking pictures, and on occasions celebrating, and on occasions shouting... all in a public place, and all quite legal.

I tried to ask different riot cops whether they were of the view that there was anything illegal about what we were doing, and all of them refused to answer my question.

Eventually, after the police had abused and arrested a large number of people from among the peaceful marchers behind the 46th Street barricade, the activity began to subside.

As I walked to the subway, at around 7:30 pm, I noticed that a very large portion of 47th Street had been closed and was designated as "Pen 6", indicating to me that the police had set up at least 6 "pens" and were planning on making mass arrests.

The police action was totally uncalled for and unprovoked. The only people who "took over" Times Square were the police. Had they not been there, things would have gone smoothly. The police were the ones who shut down, and interfered with the traffic, on 7th Avenue. Everyone else I saw was on sidewalks, in public squares, or in pedestrian plazas, except for the marchers who were on 46th Street where the police had directed them to go.

Any injuries were caused by illegal police action and nothing else.

PS Filmmaker Michael Moore was directly across the street from me on 7th Avenue. I hope he got some good footage, because mine... is bad, really bad.

Solidarity ~ @VanJones68

Rebuild the Dream, Powered by MoveOn.org Civic Action
Truly amazing.

Early this morning in New York, faced with the threat of eviction, the protesters at Occupy Wall Street were joined by union members, by community organizers, and by thousands of other New Yorkers standing in solidarity with them.

And because they refused to back down, the park's owners had to. Brookfield Properties, the "global asset manager" that owns Liberty Plaza, withdrew their request to clear the park.1

This victory in New York shows how powerful we can be when we all stand together—the 99% occupying Wall Street, the other occupations that have sprung up across the country, and the hundreds of thousands of members of the American Dream Movement standing in solidarity with them.

Now Occupy Wall Street is calling for a huge day of action tomorrow to protest Wall Street greed, with events all across the country and the world.2 If you haven't been down to show your support for your local occupation, tomorrow is the day to do it.

When the news broke yesterday that Mayor Bloomberg was planning to evict protesters from Zuccotti Park, the response was amazing.

Occupy Wall Street protestors vowed to hold the park and called for a show of solidarity from the broader community. More than 500,000 people signed petitions from Rebuild the Dream, MoveOn, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, AFL-CIO, CREDO, and many other groups. The petitions were delivered to City Hall, and tens of thousands across the country backed them up with calls demanding the mayor not interfere with the protests.

And this morning, thousands of New Yorkers converged on the park to peacefully stand in solidarity with the protesters and make sure they weren't evicted.

Tomorrow is the opportunity for all of us, all across the country, to stand in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street.

Thank you for all you do to make our country better.

Religious leaders stand up for farmworkers against Trader Joes ~ @ciw #trafficking

Religious allies take a stand
in Trader Joe's campaign!

Southern California
religious leaders, Rabbis for Human Rights make their voices heard loud and clear in growing call for Trader Joe's to support Fair Food Program...
One week out from the big march to Trader Joe's corporate headquarters in Monrovia, CA, Southern California faith community allies -- including religious leaders from Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice (CLUE) of both Los Angeles and Orange County and National Farm Worker Ministry -- have issued a powerfully-worded sign-on letter to Trader Joe's CEO Dan Bane. Here is an extended excerpt from the moving letter:
"... Trader Joe’s puzzling and misleading public statements about the Fair Food agreements and the company’s attempts to foist responsibility off on their wholesalers illustrates the extent to which Trader Joe’s has not yet even understood the basics. We find this inexcusable given that the CIW has been willing to meet in person with Trader Joe's, has shared the template of the Code of Conduct, and has an indisputable track record of working conscientiously and successfully with other major corporations. The Fair Food agreements are being implemented now and dramatically improving the lives of farmworkers. That Trader Joe’s would scorn these agreements and their achievements is, frankly, unconscionable.
As people of faith we believe that all people are created by God for good purpose: to dwell justly with one another and to care for all creation. Farmworkers, corporate executives, growers and consumers depend upon another to grow, harvest, sell and obtain the food we need for ourselves and our families. Trader Joe’s has a reputation as an ethical company; it is one of the reason members of our congregations shop at your store. You have an opportunity here to do what is right and good; to make an historic contribution to transforming this part of our food system into one that ensures well-being for all. This is not the first time corporate executives or growers have had to decide what to do. We hope that you will follow the example of Jon Esformes, a principle in Pacific Tomato, when at a press conference he said, “you wake up and you realize that maybe this is something we could have done yesterday, but I am certainly not going to wait until tomorrow.”
Mr Bane, do not wait. Work now with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers to forge a Fair Food agreement of which that you, your company and your customers can be proud. Use your power to help rectify rights of farmworkers long trampled that the dawn of a new day in the Florida tomato fields might blaze into bright morning light." read more
If you are a faith leader in Southern California and would like to add your name, there is still time! Send an email to info@justharvestusa.org to sign-on today.
Meanwhile, visit the CIW website today to continue reading this post for more on the faith community front in the Campaign for Fair Food! Thanks - Coalition of Immokalee Workers
